PSHE including RSE
Welcome to our PSHE curriculum, where children develop the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to thrive as confident, respectful and responsible individuals from EYFS through to Year 6.
In the early years, learning begins through play, conversation and shared experiences. Rooted in the EYFS prime area of Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED), children begin to understand their feelings, build relationships and explore the world around them in a safe and nurturing environment. These foundations are built on as pupils grow, developing independence and a deeper understanding of themselves and others.
Throughout the school, PSHE is taught in a meaningful and real-life context. You will see children taking part in discussions, working collaboratively and reflecting on their own experiences. Through activities such as circle time, role play and group work, pupils are encouraged to express their views, listen to others and develop important life skills. Our curriculum is structured around the key areas of Relationships, Health and Wellbeing, and Living in the Wider World, providing a broad and balanced approach in line with the PSHE Association programme of study. It is based on the Twinkl Life scheme and has been adapted to meet the needs of our pupils and the structure of our school.
Learning in PSHE helps children to stay safe, build positive relationships and understand their place within a diverse society. Pupils are supported to think critically, ask questions and develop a strong sense of self. This is strengthened through our trauma-informed, relational approach to behaviour and our Behaviour Curriculum, which supports children to understand and regulate their emotions, build positive relationships and make safe, respectful choices.
A key part of this curriculum is Relationships and Sex Education (RSE), delivered in an age-appropriate and sensitive way. Children learn about their bodies, personal boundaries and the importance of respect and consent. As they move through the school, they develop an understanding of change, growth and healthy relationships, and know how to seek help when needed. Aspects of sex education are taught in Years 1, 5 and 6, and we work closely with parents to support children’s learning.
By the time they reach Year 6, our pupils leave as confident, thoughtful individuals, equipped to make positive choices and build healthy relationships.
PSHE is not just about learning—it’s about growing into the person you are becoming.
