Design & Technology

Welcome to Design and Technology at Jotmans Hall where our learners get to research, design and make all sorts of projects almost in as if they would in a real world environment!

Children at Jotmans Hall start in the Early Years with problem solving and trying to physically construct with purpose. What will happen if I use some pieces of wood to make a bridge to help step over the puddle, what if I stick some fabric on my broken tent with Sellotape? Its all about exploring ..

As learners move into the national curriculum, the projects are carried out during a dedicated week so that children can get fully involved in all aspects of their projects from start to finish. It also gives plenty of opportunities for cross-curricular working.

Materials and tools are available to try out and its very hands on!

In KS1, the children are given a brief-design a kite, puppet, vehicle, moving picture, fruit kebab or bedroom for a toy ? They research eagerly to see what kind of designs exist and then make their own, narrow it down to one favourite and plan it in more detail. They cannot wait make their design become a reality and are fully immersed, adapting their design as they go. When completed, the children evaluate the success of their finished product, keenly comparing with their peers.

In KS2, things get more complex, with pricing, measurement and more detailed research and design. Phone cases, Christmas stockings, bread making, wooden toys, catapults, light up decorations and bridges are great projects to challenge our older pupils. They enjoy to applying their skills in other subjects such as, Maths, Art, Science and History to their design. It is a process of trying out their initial ideas, adapting and refining them as they go.

Our learners thoroughly enjoy their Design & Technology weeks and remember them for years to come, setting them up to be problem solvers in the future!
