History

Welcome to our History journey, where curiosity, confidence, and a passion for the past grow from EYFS to Year 6.

In EYFS, children explore history through Understanding the World—sharing family stories, noticing changes over time, and making sense of the past through play and hands-on experiences.

As they progress, learning is carefully sequenced to build knowledge step by step. Children make links between events, place them in chronological order, and revisit key ideas to deepen understanding. Each topic is driven by a key question, encouraging curiosity and guiding their thinking about how the past has shaped the present.

Across the school, history is taught through a practical and engaging approach. Using artefacts, timelines, and sources, children develop their “History Super Skills,” learning to question, interpret evidence, and think critically. Each term includes three extended afternoon lessons, allowing children to fully immerse themselves before taking part in a final debate to reflect on their enquiry question.

History is active and collaborative. Children share ideas, ask thoughtful questions, and experience “lightbulb moments” as their understanding grows.

By Year 6, pupils are confident historians who can think critically, make connections across time, and show a genuine passion for the past.
